System of the Month April: Call of Cthulhu

Excited for thrills and cosmic horror? Then join GM Cenk in April as we delve into the world of Call of Cthulhu, a pen-and-paper role-playing game full of eerie mysteries and unfathomable terrors.

CoC – perfect for D&D veterans and tabletop novices:

D&D veterans: Explore a new genre with unique mechanics and a focus on horror and atmosphere.

Tabletop novices: The Cthulhu rulebook is easy to learn while offering depth. You’ll get a gentle introduction to the genre, and you don’t need to bring anything – dice and characters will be provided 😊.

Unleash your inner detectives:

Step into the roles of investigators, scholars, or adventurers and uncover the dark secrets in the sleepy towns of America.

Decipher cryptic clues, confront unimaginable monsters, and battle the madness threatening to consume you.

Unique gameplay experience:

The system focuses on the horror and fear of the players. Here, you’re not heroes, but at best survivors!

Your characters aren’t invincible heroes but normal people fighting against madness. Fights are quickly over and usually last only one to three rounds.

You’ll venture into America in the year 1920 and fight for survival against the supernatural. Your decisions have clear consequences and can quickly lead to your downfall!

Welcome, Adventurer!

For the second time as a GM, I am setting out on the paths through the cursed realms of Barovia – the domain of Count Strahd von Zarovich.

As an experienced game master I offer you the epic campaign Curse of Strahd for Dungeons & Dragons 5e. Experience:

  • A captivating adventure – The technical refinements of the KuL room bring the Count’s dark realm to (un)life around you.
  • Multifaceted role-play – Explore the secrets and agendas of diverse characters to drag enemies into the light and find allies in the darkness.
  • Tactical battles – KuL’s battle screens challenge your strategic skills in the fight against the dark hordes.

Are you ready to accept your fate and face the horror? Then join me and venture into the shadows of Curse of Strahd. But be warned – many have already fallen victim to the curse of Strahd in the Land of Lost Souls…

Organisation

Frequency and game days: On 2-3 Tuesday or Wednesday evenings per month we make the streets of Barovia a little safer.

Costs: This paid campaign costs CHF 50 per player per session. This includes my session preparation, the actual playing time and the contribution to the KuL rent.
The price is too high for you? Let me know!

Players: Whether newcomer or veteran; all are welcome in the Land of the Prince. The campaign offers space for 4-5 players.

Language: The campaign can be held in German or English. Please let me know your language preferences and options.

Update 22.3.: Up until now there are two players who both prefer Tuesdays and German as game-dates and -language.

Outline

We will start with an (unpaid) session 0, where we will get to know each other, clarify expectations and boundaries and create your characters. This will probably take place at the end of April.

After that we will start with the first adventure, which will keep us busy for 2-3 evenings. You can get to know me as GM and then decide whether we will face the first act of the campaign together.

The campaign is divided into acts, which allows us to decide after each act how to continue, to welcome new warriors to Barovia or to say goodbye to old adventurers.

Who is the GM?

Hi, I’m Tim. In addition to my work in nursing and my Kung Fu training, I love playing and running PnP roleplaying games. In the last few years I’ve run three multi-year campaigns, including Curse of Strahd, as well as one with up to 8 players.

I founded the Arcanor community campaign, wrote my own adventures, introduced newcomers to the hobby at Herofest and set up the KuL room – not least so I had somewhere to put all my books on the subject.

I really enjoy sharing my passion for role-playing games with others and I’m looking forward to many more exciting adventures in the future. But even before I became a GM, I was very involved in a DSA-campaign and learnt a lot in the process.

Now I’m really looking forward to a new chapter with you!

You can find out more about me here.

Disclaimer

Curse of Strahd is a horror campaign and includes topics such as physical, psychological and sexualised violence and violence against children. We can discuss our boundaries and the use of safety tools, such as the X-card, at Session 0.

New month, new Höck. A brief overview of this month’s topics:

  • A budget for 2024 was planned and presented.
  • In order to create an incentive for longer campaigns in the KuL room, there are now quantity discounts! If you book 3 dates for play sessions, you will receive a 10% discount on the rental fee. With 5 dates it is even 20%!
  • We are part of RPG Bern and are in the process of developing a Code of Conduct to explicitly create a pleasant climate of cooperation in our TTRPG communities.
  • To ensure that all our members have the opportunity to use the room, we would like to avoid vacancies and unnecessary bookings as far as possible. We have therefore decided to charge a gradual cancellation fee if a reservation is not taken and the date cannot be filled.

We had a party!

KuLists and CDC members came together on the open day to celebrate both the collaboration between the two associations and the first anniversary of Katakomben and Lindwürmer.

There were the various gadgets and amenities of the two spruced-up rooms to marvel at, drinks and snacks, cakes and cupcakes to enjoy and nerdy knowledge to prove in a pub quiz!

A huge thank you to everyone who baked, shopped, donated, set up, prepared and tidied up! And of course to all those who continually enrich our clubs with their games, ideas, imagination and great experiences! Thanks to you, it’s worth it.

Here’s to many more years full of experiences, adventures and unforgettable moments!

Tim

And thanks for the photos!

KuL-News January ’24

Our annual general meeting has taken place. Here are the most important facts:

  • Last year, 148 events took place in the city’s KuLest premises! That’s over 12 per month! Almost every other day!
  • Manuel has compiled an overview of the finances. We currently expect a monthly income of around CHF 550 and expenses of CHF 330. The surplus will be used to repay our debt of CHF 2,200 for the room upgrades. After that we can devote ourselves to new projects!
  • The discussion regarding rent contributions from public regular campaigns received a decision: Instead of fixed contributions from the GMs, players of Arcanor and the Pathfinder Society are encouraged to contribute to the rent via collections. Thank you in advance!
  • We are getting reinforcements on the board! Namely from:
    • Alain, who leads the Pathfinder Society
    • Sybille, dedicated Arcanor player and loyal help in moving/crafting tasks
    • Cenk, who you may already know as Arcanor-GM
Thanks a billion! We are looking forward to it!
