The first half-year in our new space is over, and we can report positive results: 30 paid rentals per month! Well, if you include the free and discounted sessions, we average 26.3 “normalized” sessions per month—which is still above the expected average. In addition, we’ve continued to grow and now have 60 members.
It’s also great news that the follow-up project to our previous community campaign “Arcanor”, is set to launch soon! Starting in mid-August, you’ll be able to check out the “Blackrock” campaign wiki and create your character. An info session will also take place on August 27 – and the first sessions will begin in September. More details to follow; if you have any questions, please contact Daniel (@TheRobidog), Elia (@Senji_Elia), or Nino (@capta1n_n3m0).
But first, it’s time for the summer break: There won’t be a “System of the Month” in July, and August’s schedule will be announced later. If you’d like to host something yourself, you’re of course still welcome to reach out.
Here’s what else has been happening:
The library has been restocked with boxes of books and completely reorganized. In addition, there is now a list of all the rulebooks and adventures available at KuL.
And we now have the requested book-swap shelf: Just bring a book and take another one home. We hope you enjoy swapping books!
We’ve also replaced the lamps in the library with high-quality alternatives—they’re now working perfectly. So this is a good opportunity to take a look at the instructions for our lighting system.
KuL-Quest: Starfinder 22.07. & 19.08. English TTRPG Explore alien ruins in search of forgotten magic. Face off against corporate technomages and their robot armies in the grimy corridors of a space station. Attack a dragon-manned assault cruiser with your spaceship, defend a new colony from dangerous alien predators, or make first contact with a previously unknown alien empire. Registration via SwissRPG
KuL summer party 8.8. Social Exclusively for KuL members: Our annual summer party with a barbecue and lots of fun. For the first time, it’ll be held right at our venue! More details to follow.
Information session: Blackrock Campaign 27.8. Meeting Information session on the DnD community campaign “Blackrock,” which starts in September. Registration to follow
The next meetup will take place on Thursday, September 3 at 6:00 p.m. You can attend in person or via Discord.
Daniel has kindly donated a large number of rulebooks and adventures, which are now available for you to browse and borrow in the library. Thank you very much! Thanks also to Sybille, who provided her car and her time to help us bring the books home.
New order
To make room for the new additions, we have reorganised and sorted the shelves by system/genre. Here is an overview:
Shelf 1: Dungeons & Dragons, role-playing non-fiction and maps/terrain
Shelf 2: Pathfinder, GM guides, standalone systems and maps/terrain
Shelf 3: Horror, sci-fi, post-apocalyptic, board games
Shelf 4: Pirates, DSA, classic fantasy, adorable fantasy (suitable for children), Lord of the Rings
Shelf 5: Pick-up and drop-off shelf, fiction, board games
Shelf 6: Miniatures
Shelf 7: Academic works, game necessities (dice, pens, tokens, etc.), board games
I highly recommend having a look through the maps/terrain section – there are some really great items there!
Book-Swap-Shelf
In response to popular demand, we are now offering you the chance to swap books. The Book-Swap-Shelf is based on a simple concept: bring a book you’ve finished reading and enjoyed, and take a new one home with you!
At the moment, there are only three paperbacks on the shelf, so feel free to add to the collection. However, we would ask that you don’t bring half your personal library straight away. If the idea goes down well, we’ll expand it and provide more space.
What can I bring? Novels and graphic novels from the genres of fantasy, horror, sci-fi, crime, romance, etc., in German and English yo want to part with
What doesn’t belong there? Discarded schoolbooks, obscure non-fiction books that have nothing to do with TTRPGs, books you absolutely want to get back.
Terms and Condition of Borrowing
Digital list Here you’ll find the list of all available rulebooks. Thank you Mario!
Who can borrow what? Borrowing our books is reserved for KuL members only. Please sign the list (currently on the Book-Swap-Shelf) if you want to take a book home. The standard loan period is 30 days. We operate on a principle of honesty: as long as everyone sticks to the rules and takes care of the books, the system works. Meaning there won’t be a fine straight away if the book isn’t returned until day 32. The main thing is that it does come back. If it doesn’t, we’ll hunt you down, eventually. Just kidding (maybe…. or maybe not).
Board games All the board games have been sorted and checked to ensure they are complete. To keep it that way, we kindly ask you to leave them on the KuL premises and play them here.
By the way: You can rent the Sci-Fi Room for short events (around 2 hours), such as board game sessions, for just CHF 20! As part of KuLPlay, you can also use the room for free, provided the gaming session is open to all members. (Contact us, if you want to try one of the games!)
Last but not least Do you have any rulebooks and adventures lying around at home that you’ve played through and are now just gathering dust? Would you like to share them with the community? We’re always happy to receive donations!
It was as if we’d invited disaster upon ourselves: whilst in our March news post we were joking about the fact that we weren’t moving house or undertaking any major renovations, our association’s premises ended up looking like a building site for a while following water damage in the rooms above. But all is well: the worst is over and soon everything will look as we – and you – are used to.
What else has been happening:
Room hire revenue remains above budget, which we’re very pleased about. Equally encouraging: donations at free events have increased. We’re delighted by this show of appreciation!
The Pathfinder Society and the Starfinder Society have been discontinued. There is a separate post explaining the reasons. However, Starfinder adventures will continue at KuL, and the replacement for the Pathfinder Society is expected to launch in the autumn.
The new KuL campaign world and the successor to Arcanor is scheduled to launch in June or July.
Demand for the Paint&Prep event has been very low recently. Therefore, the format is being suspended for the time being. However, we are open to ideas so that we can continue to provide a space for GMs in the future, much like the GM-Talk used to be.
Dogs are awesome and therefore welcome at KuL. We ask owners to clean and dry their four-legged friends’ paws. Additionally, please give the room a quick tidy after playing to prevent dog hair from accumulating. Thank you very much!
KuL Play: Nemesis 12., 21. & 27.05. English Board game Nemesis is a semi-cooperative board game that throws you and your crew right into a nightmare scenario on a crippled spaceship. You wake up from hibernation only to find: one of your crewmates is dead, the ship has sustained critical damage, and you are definitely not alone. Your goal? Survive and complete a secret mission. The catch? Every player has their own agenda, and it doesn’t always align with the survival of the entire group… Register via Discord
System of the Month Juni 5., 11., 20. & 30.06. Englisch TTRPG Daggerheart is the fantasy roleplaying system from Darrington Press (famously known for Critical Role). It was developed to tell epic stories that focus primarily on the characters and celebrate the fine line between triumphant success and dramatic twists. In a world full of magic and danger, you step into the roles of brave heroes. Register via Discord
KuL Social 3.6. Social We will meet again to chat, play games, and admire rooms.
The next meetup will take place on Wednesday, July 1 at 18:00. You can participate in person or via Discord.
It all started with an idea: to run the Pathfinder Society in Bern. The Pathfinder Society is the official campaign for the Pathfinder system – similar to the Adventure League in Dungeons & Dragons. One-shot adventures, so you can try out the system and have a great evening, but also a series of one-shots, so players can experience a great story over several evenings and encounter familiar NPCs in a later adventure.
To make the Society’s international concept work, quite a bit of bookkeeping and administrative effort was required. You could collect points and use them to unlock bonuses. The flip side of the coin, however, was that you had to open an additional account on a website that was entirely in English (an issue for sessions played in German). And then there were some spells that were banned, some lineages that were banned, restricted under certain circumstances and/or had to be unlocked… Yet all you really wanted was to just give a different system a go.
The longer it went on, the more the drawbacks of the Society became apparent, accentuated by adjustments made to the Society adventures at the start of the current season. And that’s when the decision was made to stop running the Society adventures.
This also applies to the Starfinder Society, which has been running adventures in the KuL rooms for a few weeks now. The criticism concerns exactly the same points that are also perceived as cumbersome in the Pathfinder Society.
An additional account (and an Organised Play ID) is required
Some options must first be unlocked
The objective-based, multi-stage reporting of the adventure restricts the GM’s ability to improvise
And generally speaking, the overarching concept of the Finder campaign is not seen as an advantage by the vast majority of players. The main thing is to play; the chance of ever participating in a Finder Society with your character somewhere else is slim.
Therefore, both the Pathfinder Society and the Starfinder Society are being discontinued, and the two current game masters will no longer be offering sessions.
What now?
Pathfinder Society
The Pathfinder Society is taking an early summer break and will return by October at the latest. It will no longer operate as a Society, but will continue with one-shot series. Planning is still at an early stage, but if the game master’s ideas are anything to go by, there will also be annual seasons with their own interconnected stories, as is familiar from the Pathfinder Society. Just without the administrative burden and the level-up rules for higher-level characters.
Starfinder Society
The Starfinder Society is not taking a break. Anyone wishing to explore the infinite expanses will still find what they’re looking for at KuL. No longer under the umbrella of the Starfinder Society, but completely separate from it. That means: no Organised Play ID, no Society restrictions, and a little more freedom for the game master and the players.
