Upgrade Library

Dear KuL members,

Our library has had an upgrade!

New books/rulebooks

Daniel has kindly donated a large number of rulebooks and adventures, which are now available for you to browse and borrow in the library. Thank you very much!
Thanks also to Sybille, who provided her car and her time to help us bring the books home.

New order

To make room for the new additions, we have reorganised and sorted the shelves by system/genre. Here is an overview:

Shelf 1:
Dungeons & Dragons, role-playing non-fiction and maps/terrain

Shelf 2:
Pathfinder, GM guides, standalone systems and maps/terrain

Shelf 3:
Horror, sci-fi, post-apocalyptic, board games

Book-Swap-Shelf

In response to popular demand, we are now offering you the chance to swap books.
The Book-Swap-Shelf is based on a simple concept: bring a book you’ve finished reading and enjoyed, and take a new one home with you!

At the moment, there are only three paperbacks on the shelf, so feel free to add to the collection. However, we would ask that you don’t bring half your personal library straight away. If the idea goes down well, we’ll expand it and provide more space.

What can I bring?
Novels and graphic novels from the genres of fantasy, horror, sci-fi, crime, romance, etc., in German and English yo want to part with

What doesn’t belong there?
Discarded schoolbooks, obscure non-fiction books that have nothing to do with TTRPGs, books you absolutely want to get back.

Terms and Condition of Borrowing

Digital list
Here you’ll find the list of all available rulebooks. Thank you Mario!

Who can borrow what?
Borrowing our books is reserved for KuL members only.
Please sign the list (currently on the Book-Swap-Shelf) if you want to take a book home. The standard loan period is 30 days.
We operate on a principle of honesty: as long as everyone sticks to the rules and takes care of the books, the system works. Meaning there won’t be a fine straight away if the book isn’t returned until day 32. The main thing is that it does come back. If it doesn’t, we’ll hunt you down, eventually. Just kidding (maybe…. or maybe not).

Board games
All the board games have been sorted and checked to ensure they are complete. To keep it that way, we kindly ask you to leave them on the KuL premises and play them here.

By the way: You can rent the Sci-Fi Room for short events (around 2 hours), such as board game sessions, for just CHF 20!
As part of KuLPlay, you can also use the room for free, provided the gaming session is open to all members.
(Contact us, if you want to try one of the games!)

Last but not least
Do you have any rulebooks and adventures lying around at home that you’ve played through and are now just gathering dust? Would you like to share them with the community? We’re always happy to receive donations!

Horror-RPG

If you want to get in the right mood for our little Halloween-Extravaganza, you can do so on Friday, 25.10.24 with a horror RPG at the CDC:

  • Game Master: Al
  • System: Liminal Horror: Investigators (e3)
  • Scenario: The Chair
  • Spieler: max 6
  • Language: English
  • Time: FR, 18:00-23:00
  • Registration: Direct Message via discord to your GM Al (Rogue-AL on discord)

Tales from the Void: The Chair
“Rumor has it that there is a decrepit house deep in the woods to which no roads lead. They say that there is an antique but possessed chair, luring curious souls into the house and seducing them to sit upon it. However, once you step through the doors, you will be trapped forever. You are investigators who seek to find out the truth behind the rumor. Can you uncover the secrets hidden within and escape the house? Or will you become part of its furniture and be trapped there for eternity?”

Liminal Horror: Investigators (3e) is a modern horror TTRPG that uses a rules-light system and is based on the same one found in Into the Odd,Cairn, or Maze Rats, but modified for a horror setting. In this one-shot, players will take on the role of curious investigators who come upon the rumored house in the woods.

The Chair is a scenario from the Tales from the Void anthology, written and designed by Zach Hazard Vaupen. Some slight changes to the scenario can be expected which draw their inspiration from movies such as Hausu (1977), Cube (1997), Thirteen Ghosts (2001), Saw II (2005), Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), and Crimson Peak (2015).

About the “Liminal” in Liminal Horror. To avoid some confusion, the title does not refer to the concept of liminal spaces or the famed “Backrooms” per se. It is connected to the idea of liminal (transitional) states such as characters/investigators going through changes as they face horrors.

Not suitable for minors.
The One-Shot will be held in English and is intended for beginner and experienced RPG players.

System of the Month Savage Worlds

One system, a thousand worlds – Savage Worlds is a simple, universal RPG-system that can be applied to any setting imaginable.

This entry-level adventure is set in modern times and takes the characters on a spooky journey through rural Wisconsin, USA. Get ready for a thrilling horror story where the characters have to fight for their lives!

What do I need to know?

We’ll be playing with pre-generated characters and the simplified Savage Worlds Test Drive rules, so we can dive right into the adventure without much preparation. You don’t need to know the rules in advance, we will go over them together before the game starts.

All you need to play are dice (D4-D12, you can also borrow them from us) and something to write with.

If you want to familiarize yourself with the system in advance, you can download the PDF here:

Here is an overview of the characters. We will assign them together:

The game is free for all participants.

When do we play?

The adventure is planned as a one shot, so it should be finished in one sitting. However, it is always possible that it will take a little longer than expected and we will have to split it over two game days. We will discuss the second date then if needed.

  • Thursday, 20 June 23 from 6pm

Join the game

If you would like to participate or have any questions, please contact me at info@kul-verein.ch, subject “Savage Worlds”.

I am looking forward to seeing you,
Patricia

The archway stands!

The catacomb part in “Catacombs & Lindworms” is (almost) finished! In the last few days a huge decorative element for the KuL room has been created from styrofoam, plaster, paint and a lot of patience, with the goal in mind to provide more fantasy ambience.

On Saturday, Tim, Mario and Patricia finally attached the archway to the wall. It is not quite finished yet, as there are still a few small corrections and finishing touches to be made, but we wanted to show you how it looks in the room!

The archway is meant as a frame for a kind of interactive art gallery:

Here, all your beautifully crafted characters, monsters, maps, etc. can be presented in style, instead of living a shadowy existence in a dark closet!

Patricia shows you in a short step-by-step how the fake stone archway has been created:

Materials for fake stone archway

  • 11 insulation boards made of styrofoam (FPS 15, 100cm x 50cm x 2cm)
  • felt-tip pen
  • cutter / carpet knife
  • 2kg plaster
  • white glue
  • toothpick
  • acrylic paints (black, white, terracotta, green)
  • brush
  • water
  • tarpaulin or newspapers
  • adhesive tape
  • string
  • dried moss

Day 1: Basic structure

Styroporplatten auf Boden auslegen

First, lay out the polystyrene sheets on the floor and cut them to the size of the wall.

Styroporplatten in Bogenform zugeschnitten

Draw the arc and cut it out with a cutter.

Dekorelemente des Bogens aufzeichnen

Now sketch out the basic shape of the arch and the decorative elements. (My design has changed several times during the project).

Dekorsteine für Torbogen ausschneiden und platzieren

Cut out the individual decorative stones from the remaining styrofoam sheets and place them. The upper part of the arch was a real challenge, so I adjusted the design again and cut the stones straight instead of curved.

Small imperfections can be corrected later with the plaster.

Steinmauerstrukturen in Styropor schnitzen

Now paint on the approximate shape of the stone wall with a felt-tip pen and roughly trace it with the cutter. The porous nature of the styrofoam automatically creates an irregular, natural pattern.

To give the styrofoam surface even more stone texture, I scratched and scored it with the cutter, worked on it with my fists and walked around on it – This creates a surprisingly realistic relief!

Day 2: Plaster

Styropor-Torbogen eingipsen

In a next step, I glued all the decorative stones with white glue and then painted the whole thing with plaster.

Now it looks like real stone!

In retrospect, I would approach the whole thing a little differently: I would plaster and paint the individual decorative stones first and then prime the surface with black paint before gluing them on.

Learn from my mistakes!

Day 3: Color

Torbogen mit Acrylfarben grundieren

Now color comes into play!

With the colors white, black and terracotta in different mixing ratios, the individual stones are painted. This might look a bit nervous at first, but it will come together nicely with the next step – This process ensures natural color nuances in the end!

Torbogen mit Wash einpinseln

Now apply a dark wash to the sheet. This is a very fluid, transparent color that flows into all the cracks and gaps and gives the whole thing more depth. In addition, the variegated colors are evenly tinted and a uniform, harmonious color scheme with many natural nuances is created – just like a real stone wall!

Finally, all elevations and ridges are emphasized with a light brush, which brings even more detail and texture to the overall effect.

Day 4: Finish

Fertigen Torbogen aufrichten

And here is the final result!

The arch was attached to the wall with tape and adhesive strips. Since the arch spans from the floor to the ceiling, it carries its own weight (Styrofoam is amazingly stable!).
The tape strips are just to keep the whole thing from tipping forward.

When mounting it to the wall, a few small things broke and had to be adjusted (Unfortunately, the arch was a little too high to begin with).

To finish the archway, the next step will be to add moss and some artificial staining to make the whole thing a bit more realistic…

I hope you like the fake stone archway! The construction was a lot of fun, even though it took much longer than expected….
