System of the Month January: Green Oaks

Green Oaks is a role-playing game where each player takes on the role of an Elder living in Green Oaks, a charming, greenery surrounded structure. Rumors swirl that great treasures are hidden in its basement, though some believe the entire building is actually an alien base conducting experiments on its elderly residents. Local youths whisper that the structure is built over an ancient Native American cemetery, while others say it’s the very mouth of Hell.

System of the Month December: Blades in the Dark

Blades in the Dark is a tabletop role-playing game about a gang of daring rogues seeking their fortune in the haunted streets of an industrial fantasy city. There are robberies, chases, occult secrets, dangerous deals, bloody skirmishes, and above all, riches to be had—if you’re brave enough to take them.

You and your young gang must hold your own against rival gangs, powerful noble families, vengeful ghosts, the Bluecoats of the city guard, and the siren songs of your own vices. Will you rise to power in the criminal underworld? What are you willing to do to get to the top?

The peculiarities of the system (Forged in the Dark)

Blades in the Dark uses the Forged in the Dark rule system, which features several unique mechanisms that shape the feel of the game:

  • The Score: Instead of playing out every detail of the plan, the game often begins directly with the score. The players briefly explain their intentions and plan, and the game master (GM) asks how they will get into the target location. Details of the plan are purchased as flashbacks during the score. This keeps the momentum high and avoids lengthy preliminary skirmishes.
  • Position and Effect: A central dice mechanism. Before the roll, the GM and the player determine the position (safe, endangered, desperate) and the effect (low, normal, high) of the intended action. This immediately signals the risks and rewards associated with the roll, making the players’ decisions more profound.
  • Stress and Resistance: Player characters (SCs) can take on stress to roll additional dice, cancel a bad roll, or buy a flashback. They can also use stress to resist and mitigate the consequences (damage, capture, etc.) of a bad roll with a resistance roll. Stress is a valuable but limited resource that encourages constant weighing of risk and reward.
  • The Clan (The Crew): The gang itself is a character with its own abilities, strengths, and a stronghold (Lair). The clan’s progress in the criminal underworld is represented by influence (Reputation) and control over territories (Claims). The game is as much the story of the gang’s rise as it is that of the individual villains.
  • Vices and Heat: To relieve stress, the PCs must indulge in their vices (e.g., gambling, drugs, romance), which often leads to new, unforeseen complications. Every criminal act generates heat (the attention of the city guard), which makes the consequences of the gang’s actions directly felt.

KuL-Quests – Hogswatch at the Snyder Manson

Twas the night before Hogswatch, and all through the house, strange creatures are stirring, along with a mouse. In fact it’s the night before that Hogswatch. You know. The one from the book.

In keeping with the Christmas season, we are offering you the one-shot “Hogswatch at the Snyder Estate” from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld RPG “Adventures in Ankh-Morpork.” The game system is heavily narrative-focused. There are few rules, but plenty of room for inventing, asserting, and discussing!

Hogswatch is the equivalent of our Christmas. The adventure is set on Discworld, of course, and is loosely based on the book “Hogswatch”. However, it is not necessary to have read the book or to be familiar with the world.

Instead, get ready for a satirical, funny, and hopefully heartwarming short adventure with cookies and Christmas music for up to five players with extremely comical, pre-made characters!

Registration

The one-shot will take place on Friday, December 12, starting at 6:00 p.m. You can register via Discord by simply clicking “interested” on the corresponding event. We will play in English OR German, depending on the registrations.

System of the Month November: Draw Steel

A new game for a new age! Draw Steel is the breathtaking new, action-oriented, fantasy RPG from MCDM that’s both fun to play and fun to run!

Designed for five players, meant to be played using maps with a grid, Draw Steel is the result of thousands of hours of testing and polish.

In Draw Steel, your character grows more powerful over the course of the battle, not less! Characters build heroic resources over the course of the battle so battles get more interesting round by round!

But Draw Steel is not only a game about epic battles against hideous monsters. The game also features robust, detailed rules for…

Montages! Cinematic sequences where the heroes work together, using their skills in imaginative ways to defeat a series of non-combat challenges. Navigate a deadly swamp! Escape a collapsing ruin! The montage rules make it easy for directors to design new montages and challenge their players in creative new ways outside of combat.

Negotiations! Convincing an NPC to help you (or stop helping your enemy) can radically change any adventure.

The rules for character creation in Draw Steel produce three dimensional characters and with the negotiation rules, you can quickly make any NPC a fully realized character with their own motivations.
