Meet us at HeroFest

This weekend, HeroFest is taking place in the Bernexpo halls in the north-east of Bern. Alongside cosplay, games, esports and lots of nerdy stuff, our beloved tabletop role-playing games will also be present.

Three KuL Game Masters on site

Of course, KuL will also be there to support! Bibl, Jarekk82 and Nevalor will offer several rounds of sessions at the SwissRPG booth on both Friday and Saturday.

Come by and play! The rounds are suitable for newcomers and beginners, so there’s no reason not to join in. 😀

Registration will take place on site at the SwissRPG booth. First come, first served!

System of the Month November: Dungeon Crawl Classics

Ah, welcome to the world of Dungeon Crawl Classics, where heroes are many but survivors are few. Here, my brave fool… er adventurers, you can send your randomly created characters straight into a series of grotesque and often deadly trials.

Your weapons will clank, your dice will roll, and your character sheets will bear witness to either glory or incompetence. The dice will decide whether you can escape the nasty pitfalls or whether your characters will be blown up by a demonic rabbit.

In Dungeon Crawl Classics, the “C” definitely stands for “chaotic”, because here you’ll experience things that even a rabid artist on mescaline couldn’t paint. From death traps that turn you into bloodthirsty bats to random spells that can turn you into a chatty pumpkin, anything goes here.

About the game

You’ll solve puzzles that would drive a beholder’s mind insane, and fight monsters so strange that you’ll forget your sword techniques to wonder about their absurd existence.

Dungeon Crawl Classics is where the concept of the “hero’s journey” has turned into a diabolical labyrinth. Here you can die, resurrect, die, be resurrected and then die again. Doesn’t that sound incredible?

The Hero’s Journey lets you take control of several level 0, not level 1, you read that right, heroes, some of whom are doomed by a sneeze from a centaur or don’t even know where the pointy end of a sword belongs.

But you know what? That’s the fun of it. You’ll look forward to the coming catastrophe that you’ll experience firsthand, and then you’ll laugh at how terribly grandiose it was. Your initially useless characters, whom you hated for their sole existence, will grow on you and become epic heroes.

You will throw dozens of innocent day laborers, peasants, craftsmen and other rabble at the hordes of terrible enemies and leave the battlefield triumphantly loaded with treasures.

So, my brave heroes, enter the world of Dungeon Crawl Classics and let yourself be swept away by the absurd violence, vicious luck and nonsensical challenges. Because if you survive here, you’ll be able to proudly proclaim that you’ve survived every madness the dice have thrown at you.

Interested people can already have a look at the rulebook.

The Star Gun must be returned!

On Wednesday, 20 September 2023, the Pathfinder Society will meet from 17:30 – approx. 23:00 in the KuL’s chambers for an important mission: the Star Gun – a valuable and powerful artefact – must be brought back to Arcadia. The adventure is 4-12: Negotiations for the Star Gun.

The adventure will be played in German.

Within their vaults the Pathfinder Society has located a rare and mysterious star gun from the distant shores of Arcadia that, while broken, still holds a deep power within it. In order to ensure that past wrongs are made right, the Society must arrange for travel within the borders of Arcadia to repair and return the star gun to its rightful home, but to do so they must first convince the council of Segada to allow a team of Pathfinders entry.

A junior team of agents is dispatched to plead their case to the councilmembers, hopefully securing friends and allies of the Society for future exploration and contact. However, a villain lies in wait, aware of the power the agents are concealing and plotting for the exact moment to strike and catch them off guard.

The adventure is suitable for characters of levels 1-4. It is also open to new players who have no role-playing experience and/or are not yet familiar with the Pathfinder system in its 2nd edition.

System of the Month October: Alien RPG

Silently, the USCSS Montero glides through the vast space. The ship carries 200,000 tons of radioactive, highly flammable hydrogen cargo, which the Weyland-Yutani Corporation wants delivered to the remote outposts at the edge of the habitable galaxy. A “special mission.” On board: a small, five-person crew in cryosleep. At least, until the onboard computer unexpectedly awakens you…

“Chariots of the Gods” is an introductory scenario for Alien RPG, based on the film series of the same name, continuing its story. If you’ve ever wanted to fight for your survival in a dystopian future, you’re in the right place. The question still remains, though, who’s more dangerous: alien organisms or your fellow humans? How well do you really know your crew? And who is pursuing what goals?

What do I have to know?

The Alien RPG is based on the “Year Zero” Engine and, not surprisingly, falls into the survival horror genre. Combat can be short and brutal, and character death must always be taken into account. The scenario comes with pre-made characters, each with different and sometimes conflicting goals. Player-versus-player actions are possible and integrated into the system, though they are constrained by the shared external threat.

The rules are fairly straightforward; we’ll go through them together in the first session. The game materials are in English, but depending on the group composition and preferences, we can also play in German. If desired, players can bring a total of 2 sets of 10 d6 in two different colors, or you can use the special dice designed for the game. Otherwise, as preparation, watching an “Alien” film of your choice is recommended…

Just tell me when!

Even though the adventure is officially labeled as a one-shot, it can’t be played through in a single evening. Overall, I anticipate it will take 2-3 sessions. The first two dates are:

    • Thursday, 12th of October at 6pm
    • Thursday, 19th of October at 6pm

If necessary, there might be another session by arrangement.

System of the Month september: Cities Without Number

The world is neon and dust.

There is nothing more than the flesh. There is nothing greater than the wires. There is nothing to dream that is not sold and nothing to worship that is not made. It is a mirrorshade world of human reflections, every red hunger and every black passion worshiped in cathedrals of glass and greed. The great love their sins like children and the least want only to be great. Who could hope for more?

Cities Without Number is a cyberpunk role-playing game built for sandbox adventures in a dystopia of polished chrome and bitter misery. Whether polished metal or flesh and blood, your operators will risk their lives and more to seize those precious things a merciless world would keep from them.

What to know?

GM Tim is playing the self-written mission “On Cloud 9” with you. We are using pre-made characters that are still in development. The rules, very similar to D&D, will be explained on-site and learned together.

The game can be run in english or german. Let me know your preference!

Disclaimer: The mission includes themes such as (gang-) violence, drug consumption, prostitution, and social misery.

Where to go?

The mission will probably be run in one session on

Saturday, 9th of September ’23 at 6pm at KuL
